Australia Institute of Health and Welfare, (2008) defines a risk factor as a term given to a health aspect which can impact on a person's health usually in a negative way. There are many different types of risk factors; they can be modifiable and non-modifiable factors. Modifiable factors have the power to be changed by an individual however non-modifiable factors can't change for example a person's genetic makeup. Risk factors affect people's everyday choice of food and nutrition as they will try to avoid conditions which can be developed from poor nutrition choices. Risk conditions such as high intake of salt and saturated fat will lead to cardiovascular disease, a low intake of dairy which can cause osteoporosis and low intake of fibre can cause the onset of colorectal cancer.
