Of the most successful American businesses over the past four decades, one in particular has been the focus of countless analyses due in part to its remarkable success. Berkshire Hathaway, self-described as a holding company with subsidiaries engaged in a number of diverse business activities, was originally incorporated as Berkshire Cotton Manufacturing in 1889. Berkshire grew into one of the largest textile producers in the US, accounting for 25% of the nation's cotton textile production. In 1955, Berkshire merged with Hathaway Manufacturing and soon after felt the toll as technological advances erased their profit margin, essentially rendering the business obsolete. In 1965, a group of investors headed by Warren Buffett purchased Berkshire Hathaway believing that they would be able return the company to profitability. The group continued to operate in the textile business until they decided to exit in 1985 due in part to meager returns and the need for large capital investment.
