It is believed that Buddhism was introduced to Japan in roughly 538, by the King of Baekje in Korea, when he sent images of Buddha, along with scripture, as he was keen to establish peaceful relations with Japan's Imperial Court. When Buddhism arrived, the Imperial court were reluctant to accept it, for fear that it would displease the native Gods ('Kami') However, the Soga family, one aristocratic family of the time, were permitted to embrace the new religion. They were keen to do so, due to its ideas brought from China- not only literature and art, but other aspects of Chinese Society; codified laws and hierarchical ideologies. At one point the scriptures and images of Buddha are said to have been discarded, after a series of plagues were believed to be the doing of the Kami. However in 587, Emperor Yomei became the first to accept the religion, when he became ill. After his death, the Soga family went to war with another aristocratic family, Mononobe. The Soga won, and were allowed to freely import ideas of continental civilization and establish the religion of Buddhism. This......
