Gerald's story certainly is a pivotal moment in the play. It appears right in the middle of the play, dividing the stories of the Birlings. The tone of the play noticeably darkens after Gerald's story. It is also the most complex of the stories, adding depth and strength to Priestley's message. Gerald is, quite literally, the 'central' character in the play. In terms of his age, he is in between the younger and older characters. He seems undecided as to the group to which he belongs, as his views veer very much between those of the old and the young as the play progresses. At the beginning and end he is in agreement with Mr. and Mrs. Birling, thinking that he doesn't really have any responsibility to anyone but himself. Indeed, his views in the earlier and later stages of the play are very much in accord with Mr. Birling's big speech in act one, where he says that "a man has to mind his own business and look after himself and his own" and at times this is Gerald's way of thinking. But half way through he changes his attitude and sees more eye to eye with Sheila and Eric. ......
