Religion has played a key role in shaping Bangladeshi politics since the 1800s which was a period of struggle between the Hindus and Muslims. Islam extremists have tried to bring the state under the traditions of Islam and to declare the state as Muslim. And indeed it was done so during military regime. The behaviour of Islam radicals in Bangladesh has raised the alarm of growing terrorism and has undoubtedly plunged the country with various other problems into turmoil. Based on my readings of Schendel, Ahmed and Mohiuddin, I argue that the role of religion and the aims and objectives of Islam fundamentalists hinders Bangladesh's economic growth and its nation building process. Moreover it has engendered many riots and violence since the 1800s. Many such tragedies could have been avoided had Islam not intruded the Bangladesh political arena at all. I will begin with highlighting some events that caused political rifts and then move onto highlighting areas where religious influence has been detrimental.
