Deconstructing Whos Afraid of Virginia Woolf Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf there are many themes that can be recognized differently by different readers. The theme of competitive masculinity appears throughout the story as Nick and George interact. The reader sees both Nick and George representing two competing masculine forces that are trying to prove themselves as heterosexual men. Throughout the play both characters use information about each other's live and also about their own lives to become the victor and make the other man the failure. Within this theme there are many themes that the reader will understand in his or her own way. Albee has a very clear intent of how he wants his books and characters to be portrayed, but individual readers have the opportunity to deconstruct and respond to his themes in their own way. Competitive masculinity in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf can be seen as the major theme of the play. Throughout the play there are always two competing figures both trying to be the more powerful control. In some cases Martha is even the masculine power claiming she has to "...wear the pants...&......
