Throughout the nineteenth century, warning signs of what is now diagnosed as depression was considered emotional disorders exclusively identified as a female diagnosis. In Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper", the narrator struggles against male authority and her depression. Gilman's obscure portrayal of the patriarchal characteristics of society is revealed as the narrator becomes progressively obsessed by the wallpaper in the room that she occupies most of the story. Despite the protagonist's fall into depression and madness, the wallpaper is actually a source of strength, allowing her a sense of liberation from her husband and the patriarchal society in general. "The Yellow Wallpaper" symbolizes the stereotypes both women and men were faced with during the nineteenth century, shows how one woman cast her hopelessness onto an inanimate object, and women's liberation from patriarchal oppression.
