Catcher in the Rye is a coming-of-age novel composed by J.D Salinger that illustrates the struggle of an adolescent boy seeking to accept society while simultaneously rejecting it. Transpiring in the early 1950's, the novel initially takes place in Pennsylvania; however, concludes within New York. The metaphor "Catcher in the Rye" meaning Holden's desire to catch children before they fall out of innocence and into the adult world, and is the novel's dominating theme throughout. Salinger demonstrates the significance of Holden's inclinations through: Holden's objection to the artificiality and deception of the adult world, his relentless grasp of innocence, and his opposition to change and maturation.
The insincerity of the adult world and society is utilized by the author to help in the development of the central theme of the novel. This is discerned in the beginning of the novel, when Salinger employs Ossenburger as a method of augmenting the theme.
