Ingrained thinking tells us our gender is an immutable essence and we acquire gender stereotype since we were born. However, is there any variation? Should we need to abide by rule set for our given gender roles? According to Judith Butler, ¡§Body is neither static nor self-identical but something that is lived and experienced in specific contexts.¡¨ She brought up an idea on our body in relation to gender performativity.
Gender performativity is the idea that gender is a habitual and learned act based on cultural standards of femininity and masculinity. The theory can be summed up to three points :1) people have performative behavior of ideal pattern of their gender 2)we keep reiterating acts to an extent that we forget gender is ¡¥chosen¡¦ not ¡¥given¡¦ and 3)we have no free choice of gender (to fashion our social practice accordingly). We are supposed to dress, to behave and to think in a way that is appropriate to our assigned gender.
