Melville Herskovit's, famous for his much debated theory, The Myth of the Negro Past which is about African cultural influences on American blacks. He tried to destroy this myth which was that blacks were primitive and they made no contribution to the history of the world when they were taken from African and enslaved in America. Herskovits believed that African culture was influential in America, both through those who had been brought from Africa and through their descendants. Under the slave regime of the antebellum south, all traces of African culture had been destroyed. The only survival of their culture was music and the dance. He believes that African roots are still alive in the African-American subculture. Herskovits argued that a certain amount of these cultural traits had been passed onto whites. Herskovits's theory demonstrated some strengths and weaknesses.
