The Hispanic Challenge is an article in which has much of significant importance to me. I too am of Hispanic ethnicity. Both my parents and I are American born. I am Puerto Rican and Cuban. I grew up listening to my parents speak Spanish to each other and relatives but it was never the primary language. Today, at 22 years old I would give everything to be bilingual. Unfortunately, it was not something my parents felt necessary for me to have as a skill. I grew up in a primarily white English speaking community. It was of no need to have Spanish as a second language. I often find myself thinking, what if when I moved to Syracuse as a child, if we moved to the west side of Syracuse where Spanish is heavily spoken, would it be a second language for me?
As I grow older it is apparent to me, the demanding need for bilingual people. Spanish is taught in schools throughout the country, and is used every day by millions of people in the United States.
