Melinda Sordino, the main character in Laurie Halse Anderson's novel, Speak, was just like any other teenager. She had many close friends, went to parties and was a happy, peppy and bubbly person. However, all of this changed one night while Melinda was out at a party. As a result of a horrific event at the party Melinda's whole persona changes. She looses her zest for life and becomes despondent. Throughout the book the author uses different symbols and motifs to show how Melinda turns into an insecure, depressed and aloof teenager. Melinda becomes incredibly insecure after she looses all of her friends. In the summer before she started high school Melinda went to a party where she ended up needing to call the police. No one gave her the opportunity to say why she called them and assumed that it was to get everyone in trouble. As a result all of the girls she thought were her friends turn their backs on her. Prior to this Melinda was able to find security in her friends and now that she has none she's lost the small amount of security and confidence that she did have. She feels ......
