Given the convergence of events in the 11th Century (the defeat of parts of the Byzantine Empire, the destruction of the Holy Sepulcher, Seljuk Turks intolerance of Christians, religious fervor created by the Investiture Controversy, the schism of 1054 causing the Roman Catholics Church's desire to establish Papal leadership, and civil unrest), it is easy to understand why the Crusades began. The harder question is what moved the thousands of people to take the Cross. While the acquisition of "booty" is documented by Anselm of Ribemont and others, one might think that this was the primary motivation. But, given the monumental sacrifices, both economic and physical, that one had to make to join the Crusades, the motivation was more than the acquisition of wealth. The primary motivation was religious. All of the crusaders, rich and poor, educated and not, were brought together as one through their love of Christ and their desire to liberate their Holy Lands from their oppressors.
