Hemostasis is stopping the loss of blood (hemorrhage). Hemostasis is accomplished by clot formation or vessel spasm, by means of mechanical pressure, or surgically by ligation or the application of hemostatic agents. The body uses the process of coagulation (the formation of a blood clot) to achieve hemostasis. Hemostasis Defects: Acquired Hemostatic Disorder- most commonly seen in the OR is acquired bleeding disorders. Among these are liver disease, anticoagulant therapy with heparin or warfarin sodium, aplasic anemia, and alcoholic liver failure. Aspirin has anticoagulant properties and should be eliminated to reduce the chance of hemorrhaging. The types of Mechanical hemostasis are clamps, ligatures, and clips, sponges, pledgets, bone wax, suction, drains, and pressure devices (tourniquets). Thermal Hemostasis: 1.) Electrosurgery the most commonly used hemostatic device and a thermal device care should be used to keep char out of the surgical incisions.
