In Things Fall Apart the settings takes place in a village called Umuofia located in the southeastern part of Nigeria. Umuofia is an Igbo village in which its traditions are very well followed. The village is respected by others around for being powerful and rich. Every person has a hut or obi. Each of the wives has a separate obi with a shed for goats and an attached chicken coop. In the village men are to sow and grow yams since yams are considered the most important crop. While women grow less significant crops like coco-yams, beans and cassava. Okonkwo who is a leader in the Igbo community is very successful in growing yams. He's hard working and has brought much honor to his village when he overthrew the Cat (undefeated wrestler). Throughout his life he lived with the thought that he can never be like his father. His father was a lazy man who had many debts in hand. Okonkwo promised to never be like him so he became a very strong economic and political person who is treated by the village with much respect and admiration.
