The role of a nurse is expansive; not only is a nurse the primary caregiver, but also a teacher, a manager, a friend, and most importantly a student. As a nurse, our primary job function is to keep the patient comfortable by relieving any pain, and by following the orders of their physician. A good nurse will teach the patient how to effectively manage their pain without using any drastic measures such as overmedicating. For the patient who is grieving over a recent occurrence, we may find ourselves providing a shoulder to cry on; we may also enjoy a laugh or two with a patient in a joyous mood. Continuous education is imperative to maintain a healthy interaction with our patients. In order to play out these roles we must constantly monitor and gauge our patients pain level, attitude, and symptoms. This constitutes as continuous learning in the job setting; before we ever reach this point however, we must first make it through nursing school.
In order to truly understand our patients, we must first understand ourselves. Every individual has a specific method of learning that works......
