"The Gilded Age" is a reference to a period of rapid economic growth during the post-Civil War and post-Reconstruction eras of the late 19th century. During this period the U.S. economy grew at the fastest rate in its history and created the modern industrial economy. The United States shifted from an agricultural to an urban, industrial society. Many Americans and immigrants migrated to the cities which led to the development of consumerism and a middle class. The term "gilded age" meant that this period appeared to be glittery on the outside but was actually corrupted in the inside. Urbanization and the industrial economy seemed positive for the U.S. but underneath it all were more complicated issues. These events in American history raised questions on shady business practices, greed, political corruption, and monopolies.
