Kaffir Boy is Mathabanes first book or autobiography on his life. Based on brutal conditions towards black people in South Africa "thanks" to Apartheid.
Growing up in Alexandra meant hate, bitterness, hunger, pain, terror, violence and fear. In the ghettos black children fight for survival from the moment they are born. They take to hating and fearing the police, soldiers and authorities. Therefore from the early age, violence was nothing strange for Mathabane, he even eye witnessed murders that had a strong impact on his life and future growing up.
The murder which had been only one of several in his neighborhood that evening, have pushed Mathabane to the edge where he questioned himself if to commit a suicide. Only his mother was able to give him the strength and love he needed to stay alive.
Not long afterward came another turning point in Mathebane's life. His grandmother, who planted and maintained white people's gardens, began working for the Smith family, who gave her cast-off books to bring home, at first comics, then classics. Eventually Mrs. Smith allowed......
