Sinking of the Titanic Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

April 15, 1912. Over a thousand people lost their lives in the sinking of the ship the RMS Titanic (Hyslop, Forsyth, and Jemima 10). Since the Titanic was thought to be unsinkable, the news of this tragedy was a shock to people all over the world. So, just what is the story behind the Titanic? What was life like on board the ship? What caused the ship to sink into the cold, unforgivable Atlantic waters? The RMS Titanic was built during a period called the "Gilded Age" (Geller 13). It was the latest flagship of the White Star Line, or the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company (RMS Titanic, Inc.), which was founded in Liverpool in 1869 (Hyslop, Forsyth, and Jemima 10). It was built in Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Ireland. The construction took five years. There were actually many reasons for the building of the Titanic. Not only was it a luxury ship for transporting passengers from Europe to the United States, it was also meant to take mail, hence the RMS which stands for Royal Mail Ship, and to carry other cargo.
