Australias Response to Communism in the Post-War Era Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the 1950s the biggest threat to Australia both democratically and physically was communism; a form of socialism that abolishes private ownership, freedom of speech and in theory unequal pay and religion. Communism went against the basis Australian rights and threatened the democracy that many men worked hard to achieve. In response to communism, Prime Minister Robert Menzies adopted the policy, forward defence. This would ensure that the fight against communism would stay as far north as possible, away from Australia. Menzies' did this because he believed in the Domino Theory; that once one country fell to communism; it would slowly spread and consume Australia. After World War Two it became apparent to Menzies that Australia could not defend its home-front and needed to seek allies in more powerful countries such as the United States and Britain. Australia's involvement in the Korean War and the Malayan Emergency were an example of not only said loyalty to the United States and Britain (respectively) but it was also an example of forward defence. 17,000 men were sent to fig......
