Painting over time has changed a few times. Starting off in the renaissance as one of the only means of art, and the best works of art were very realistic, and a way to portrait people, and then moved to something that was done and looked at differently, but still relevant in modern art. In Post-modern art it was not very relevant at all, and now it is coming around to be popular and relevant today again.
Photography is what started making painting to be looked at differently. Instead of taking hours and days to paint something completely realistic, now a photo could be taken quickly and just be had. Changing painting to be something different from what photography can do.
In Modernism, painters aimed to do things differently in painting, such as abstract expressionism. Also Clement Greenburg said that painting should be taken as just that, as paint. So the paintings were done in a much flatter matter. Then in Post-modernism it was all about performance art, conceptual art and mediums not involving painting at all.
