The imperialistic regime of the British and other modern western nations caused many positive and negative effects not only on their own countries, but also the colonies that they were occupying. In such cases as India, Egypt, and China, it could be argued that the effects of imperialism caused more harm than good to come to these countries.
India, a country rich in both culture and resources, sustained heavy losses from the residing British rule. For one, most of India's native industries were either shut down or had to compete against massive western industries. For instance, when the British came in they greatly emphasized the growing of cotton as an export, so, while they forced many people to grow cotton, the growth of food in the country plummeted and the people of India starved as a result. Also, the British ruined many traditional industries. Prior to Britain colonizing India there were many more natives skilled in certain arts of their own.
