Santiago Nassar is portrayed to be a masculine, yet compassionate entity. This is because of the interactions and encounters he has with others up to his death. The perception of this character is formed from others' reactions and words. Santiago Nasar is purely a product of his culture. Tradition is deeply entwined into the setting, leading the reader to the conclusion that his murder was a justified event; one that even upheld the values of the society and redeemed the honor of Angela Vicaro. Marquez clearly puts to blame those who stood by and witnessed Santiago's brutal end, but never wavers in its justification. Santiago's reputation for his machismo, an inflated sense of manliness, power, and dominance, was a recurrent theme throughout this novel. In this traditional society, in which this tale is told, this trait in men is an expectation. Men that behave in a way that does not portray this machismo, are viewed as weak, and are labeled as unmanly. A double edge was portrayed in Nasar's characteristics.
