Food in the Renaissance Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Renaissance was an intellectual and educational movement that originated in Italy in the late 1300s and spread throughout Europe. Nevertheless the English Renaissance flourished into the early 1600s. It was a period of "rebirth" and change in many aspects of the daily life, for example, food. The role that food played became more important. It helped define the existing upper and lower classes through the food that was available to them and the difference in their meals. Food is a necessity to society but it is also an important part of culture and history. The Renaissance was not exempt from food's defining and key role. The basic foods in the English Renaissance where bread, dairy products, meat, and fish. And for the two daily meals it was common that "dinner" was eaten at ten in the morning and "supper" at five in the afternoon. During Lent and on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the three weekly fast days, they ate fish. But the wealthier class tried to substitute forbidden foods with things like cream cheese made of almond milk. Anothe......
