Literary Response to "Cathedral" Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The short story "Cathedral", written by Raymond Carver is a first person narrative in which the narrator describes his life changing experiences that take place in his New York home in one short evening. The narrator uses comedy to grab the reader's attention and express his inner thoughts and feelings. He also takes more of a real life approach by presenting the reader with a more practical setting and instilling a trusting relationship between narrator and reader through his blunt and shameless honesty. Carver's writing style is interesting in the way he puts the reader in a position that even when given a limited amount of information from the narrator, we still come face-to-face with the appreciation and gratification the story was intended to expose. The narrator in the story seems to have been blessed with it all; a caring wife, a laid back lifestyle, and most of all the underestimated gift of sight.
