Vision & Blindness in "Oedipus the King" Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Throughout the play, "Oedipus the King", a tragic play set in the city of Thebes, Sophocles makes reference to vision and blindness both metaphorically and literally. Through Tiresias, Jocasta, and Oedipus, Sophocles unveils the great power of understanding through their blindness. Although Oedipus' doings were wrong, he had no idea of the truth until the latter portion of the play. Sophocles wants the audience to see that Oedipus' intentions were somewhat morally straight and that it was because of fate that led to the downfall of Oedipus. Oedipus has great insight on the affairs in Thebes, but he comes up short against divine insight. Oedipus was able to free the city of Thebes by solving the riddle of the sphinx yet he was unable to solve the riddle of his own life because he as blind to the truth. Oedipus had no knowledge of who his real parents were until shepherd said that Oedipus was from Laius's house. He wouldn't have found out the truth if Tiresias hadn't said to him "...the murderer pf the man whose murder you pursue is you." Tiresias had divine insig......
