In February of 2011, Hidden Valley, Dole, and Cuties, all featured a full-page advertisement in the magazine Parents. Hidden Valley's advertisement displayed their ranch dressing. Dole's advertisement displayed their fruit bowls verses other fruit bowls. Cuties advertisement displayed how fruit can run off junk food. This analysis will argue how these particular texts produce an ideology of delectable vegetables, natural fruit that comes in a bowl, and kid-sized fruit will investigate their means of doing so through their use of visual semiotics, and the verbal messages they use. The visual signs in Hidden Valley's text lay the foundation for further interpretation to be produced, and they show the idea of how vegetables will be more desirable because of their ranch dressing. The initial signs seen here are of a red-headed, freckled-faced, friendly neighborhood boy sneaking a dish of broccoli covered in Hidden Valley ranch dressing off of a neighbor's window sill.
