The Dry September - William Faulkner - Critical Essay Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The short story "Dry September" by William Faulkner is about the cruel lynching of a black man, Will Mayes, as he was unjustly accused of attacking a white woman, Miss Minnie Cooper. Moreover, the author pictures the society, in which a middle-aged woman, Minnie, was morally victimized for being an old maid. In despair, the woman is unable to do anything but create a story about the attack of a black man, so that to draw attention to her personality, as a result of which the man was cruelly killed. The story deals with many problems, such as the role of woman in society, racism, lynching, solitude. But the central tension of the story is between people and the society, which presses the ideology on every its member. William Faulkner through his work criticizes both moral and physical victimization and objectification of the people. The author reveals the tension mostly with the help of the setting, the physical atmosphere and the plot structure. The features, that help the reader feel the tension are the setting and the atmosphere. The actions take place in the South regio......
