Describe the application of psychodynamic perspectives in health and social care Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The psychodynamic approach is linked with Austrian psychologists Sigmund Freud who developed the theory of psychodynamic psychology. Freud suggested that we are not always aware of all aspects of ourselves; however we are aware of the existence of our conscious mind. Many of our memories and past experiences which are denied are locked up in a part of our mind that is called "unconscious". It is not possible to get access to the inside of the unconscious mind but can be found in our dreams or by the slip of the tongue. Freud believed that the conscious mind is like the tip of an iceberg, as only a small part is available and the rest that is under the surface is the unconsciousness as we cannot get to it. By using psychoanalysis people are able to face the past and therefore able to overcome their problems. To meet the criteria of this assignment I will be referring to Freud and Erikson. (Freud cited in Stretch and Whitehouse, 2007).
