We all know how different our cultures can be but, we are all also very much alike. The four components of culture are symbols, language, values and material objects, and norms (behavior). (Macionis, 2008 pg 9) I have chosen to discuss The United States and The Netherlands. I will discuss each element of culture in each country along with additional similarities and differences in other areas. I have found that although our ¡§official¡¨ languages are different, the Dutch also understand and speak English. Our values are similar with one major difference for me. They are very modest with wealth and material things and tend to be more open to the equality of people where America has a lot of citizens who base their social status on wealth and belongings and look down on those who are not at the same level of wealth. Our behaviors are similar when it comes to certain customs like greetings but our behaviors vary greatly where equality is concerned; the Dutch are more advanced with the legalization of behaviors we frown upon.
