Values and 1984 Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In the renounced novel 1984, authored by George Orwell, a new kind of society is explored where values are completely different. Orwell describes a place called Oceania that is the opposite of a utopia, called a dystopia. The citizens are subject to give up everything for the welfare of the entire nation. Through this objective many individuals must surrender their values. One of the themes of the novel brings readers to ask themselves 'Should the values of society overshadow the values of the individual?' Values of the individual should be balanced with the values of society. The slogan of the fictional society contains three phrases that define how the society overpowered the individual. The first part of Big Brother's slogan is "War is peace". This phrase focuses on the values of health and achievement. In Oceania there was a constant state of war to rid any extra capital or commodities. This unwinnable, continuing war was so the economy would never change.
