Rene Descartes and Francis Bacon Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Both Rene Descart and Francis Bacons were sixteenth century philosophers, but had different philosophical interpretations about knowledge and the way it was perceived. Bacon has been known as the father of the Scientific method in philosophy while Descart had been considered to be the father of modern philosophy. In this paper, I shall discuss how opposing they were by discussing that through the four idols of Francis Bacon. Discussion I will first describe what the four idols of Francis Bacon are. The intellectual fallacies during the time of Bacon were classified under four headings which he called idols. Those four headings were: 1. Idols of the Tribe: those are deceptive beliefs that are present in the human mind. They are erroneous abstractions that mingle with the facts and thereby the two become inseparable. 2. Idols of the Cave: Thoughts of an individual roam around in this cave - the mind, and are modified through education, habit and environment. So a person who dedicates himself to learning something in particular, will be possessed by his learning and his thoughts ......
