South African Import Quota on Chinese Clothing and Textiles Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

After much negotiation between the Chinese and South African governments, an import quota system came into effect on 1 January 2007, regulating the import of Chinese clothing and textiles into South Africa. According to the South African government, this quota is intended to protect and boost the local textile and clothing industry by reducing Chinese imports of these products by 30%. This reduction comes as a result of the fact that Chinese goods can be imported into the country at an enormously cheaper rate than that at which South Africa is able to produce them. This is a rising trend around the world, and is not only experienced in South Africa. The interaction between politics and economics is often a controversial one. With the economic trade between different countries, come various additional responsibilities of state. These often include such responsibilities as protection of local industry by introducing trade barriers (which is simply taxing foreign goods), quotas (limiting the number or volume of foreign goods allowed into the country) or subsidising domestic manufact......
