Fashion Change Over Time in Ancient Rome Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Women's fashion in ancient Rome changed and altered over the period of the Roman Empire. Clothing, hair and accessories changed over time in ancient Rome. The basic toga evolved into tunic, which changed into a cloak. Early women had fairly simple hair styles. Later, hair style became so complex that high class women had slaves just to do their hair. Accessories such as jewelry were inspired by the Greeks and Etruscans at first, but later, Roman styles developed. In all areas, Roman women's fashion changed over time. At first, Roman women wore a simple toga. It is a garment of Etruscan origin. The toga was made of wool, linen or silk from China's Silk Road and was a square shaped piece of cloth around 9 yards long that was draped over the body. Consuls and senators wore togas with purple stripes or collars because purple was considered a powerful or good color. The purple color was sometimes achieved with a dye made from shellfish. Black togas were worn only in times of mourning. Togas soon went out of use because they were impractical for the cold seasons. Next, the tunica was pop......
