Oldboys Assault on the Senses Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Oldboy directed by Chan-wook Park is a Korean film that belongs to a very original and fairly odd genre. This film cuts itself a very good niche in the Asian Extreme. As is common with any film in this genre and even Chan-wook Park's films in particular a very large emphasis is on violence. However in Oldboy, violence is just a common means to an end. One of the main goals of Oldboy is to do everything in its power to assault the senses of those viewing and to strike a strong emotional response.
The entire movie does a wonderful job in evoking this response throughout its entirety however the first scene in which really catches the audience is in Dae-su's "prison." It begins with a narration that is very cold, and devoid of emotion explaining that he was to spend fifteen years in this same room. This scene is very powerful due mostly to the removed narration, and yet it also invokes sympathy when the narrator (Dae-su) asks "If I had known it was to be fifteen years then, would it have been any easier?"
