Taiwan Aboriginal Music Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The aboriginal people of Taiwan, the island off the east coast of mainland China, comprise less than three percent of the population. Believed to have migrated from Tibet and southern China many centuries ago, they covered the island forming approximately twenty different ethnic groups which were further divided into clans (Wong 517). While researchers debate to what extent one tribe might have influenced another, each of the nine remaining tribes has characteristics that stand out from the rest. As a whole the aboriginal traditions of Taiwan are rich in culture, music, dance, art, religious and social ceremonies. Specifically, music and dance play a large role in the religious and social events of the tribes. As Taiwan's aboriginal youth become involved in the preservation of the arts they suffer something that Cynthia Po-man Wong calls sinicization (518), the merging of the musical and art traditions of the nine remaining tribes.
