Ethics and Slavery in the United States Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

An era of tension began in America ever since the newly formed cluster of states gained independence from Great Britain. Slavery was an integral part of the society and the economy in the United States up until the end of the Civil War, but it existed with great controversy. People back in that time would often debate the question, is it morally right to enslave other people? Also, do the benefits of slaves outweigh the restriction of human rights? Many people back around the 1820s believed that slavery was morally right and that the economic benefits outweighed the use of people as property. However, by the end of the Civil War in 1865, the majority of Americans knew that slavery was immoral. If Americans would have followed Immanuel Kant's moral theory in Foundations of the Metaphysics of Morals, or even analyzed the amount of happiness like John Stuart Mill's Utilitarianism instead of focusing on the consequences, there may not have been the need for the 4 year conflict that nearly split a new nation in half.
