Tragedy in Antigone Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Vanquished and alone in the desert of your silence. That is tragedy. In the play Antigone, written by Sophocles, it was the conflict between the highest moral laws and the laws that govern the day-to-day affairs of society that caused the deaths of most of the Oedipus family. Both Creon and Antigone can be right, or they can even be wrong. In every place there must not only be moral laws that provide a solid structure for religion or ethics, but there must also be laws of the state that prevent the bedlam which might result if everyone did what they thought was right. Antigone and Creon were entangled in a situation where the laws conflict. The tragedies were caused not by Creon or Antigone, but by the state of affairs which trammels them between two irreconcilable principles. When Creon chose to issue the edict against the burial of Polyneices, it seemed to be the right thing to do at the time.
