Tim Winton in his collection of short stories entitled "Scission" uses many literary techniques. However, Winton's use of imagery is a lot more promininant and obvious within "Secrets" and "My Father's Axe". Winton primarily uses imagery to set the scene within his short stories, in an aim to recreate this image within the reader's head. Winton's choice of setting is also interesting as his choice in setting reflects that of some of changing relationships in the stories. Winton also uses symbols to reflect changing relationships.

Winton's descriptiveness drops within his short stories, he begins with very descriptive imagery such as "long, rhythmic, semi-circular movements" and "short, jabby strokes" (pg 24) to describe the chopping techniques of father and son.
