Until 1917 Russia was ruled by an autocratic government. For three hundred years sole control lay with the Romanov family, but the revolution in February 1917 brought their dynasty tumbling down. The February revolution was caused by several factors, both in opposition to Tsar Nicholas II's rule or limiting to his power. These included: the outbreak of world war one and its effects on Russia; huge economic difficulty; scepticism towards the government; discontent amongst workers and peasants; huge loss of political support; loss of military support and revolutionary propaganda. In 1914 war broke out on a scale which had never before been seen. Russia was dragged into the conflict by their traditional loyalty to Serbia. In the beginning Russia, like most countries, was filled with a deep-rooted; patriotic excitement for the war. In his book, "Reaction and Revolutions: Russia 1881 - 1924" Michael Lynch states, "Nicholas became the symbol of the nation's resistance in its hour of need."
