There are a number of different components that a person looks for when determining the attractiveness of a possible partner. These different criteria vary from physical qualities to non-physical qualities of the potential partner. While some may believe that it is preferential to each individual's social and cultural background, psychologists for many years have studied this subject in order to make an overall generalization about what the average person for each gender is attracted to. Darwinian selection argues in favor of evolution of preferences pertaining to attractiveness in both genders for the "signals" that are "honest" indicators of genetic quality in the opposite gender (Dunn and Doria, 2010). This evolutionary theory ultimately argues that an individual, of both genders, will find the most attractive and suitable mate for them in order maximize the number of viable offspring produced.
