Mark, Luke and John all display Jesus as a man with a deep understanding of those who were oppressed and downgraded in society. The gospel of Luke portrays Jesus with a futuristic and egalitarian attitude towards treating women equally and abandoning common Jewish law. Although women's rights have obviously improved since the Old Testament, the gospel of Luke is still relevant to women today.
The Old Testament reveals that women were in significant and inferior to men in society. Women were required to 'submit themselves' to their husbands and remain silent . Women were often married off young and sent to live with her husband's family to help cook, clean and bare children . Chapter 21 of Exodus provides detailed instructions allowing a father to sell his daughter to other men and have multiple wives if they pleased. Women were segregated from men both in synagogues and in the Jerusalem Temple. Women had to remain behind a screen in the synagogue. .
