Aim:
To compare the reactivity of cyclohexane and cyclohexene using bromine water
Hypothesis:
That cyclohexene will give a greater and faster change in colour in the presence of bromine water as it is more reactive due to having a double bond
Equipment:
* cyclohexane
* cyclohexene
* bromine water (in dropper bottle)
* 2 x stoppered small test tubes
* test tube rack
* droppers
Method:
1. Place two clean and dry small test tubes in a test-tube rack.
2. Add 20 drops of cyclohexane into one, and 20 drops of cyclohexene into the second.
3. Add 5 drops of bromine water to each tube and stopper the tubes
4. Gently shake each tube to mix the chemicals. Place the tubes back into the rack and allow the layers to separate.
5. Record observations and discard chemicals with the organic waste bottle
Risk assessment:
