OxyContin Epidemic: the Silent Addict Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

It is not only important, but necessary to the future of Kentucky's children that we bring the problem of OxyContin abuse by pregnant women to the forefront of the fight against this powerful painkiller turned street drug. While media attention tends to focus its stories on the flash and drama of the individual drug busts, and the stings on the "pill mills" doing out the drugs, they fail to bring light to what I believe is the most heartbreaking casualty from the rising epidemic: the children born addicted to OxyContin and other drugs. My platform is threefold: Protection/Prevention/Prosecution. Unfortunately, most people labor under the delusion that drug addiction is associated primarily with those at the poverty level. This is one of the greatest misconceptions out there. Statistics show that 9 out of 10 drug users come from the middle to upper class families and above, and they come from families who don't do drugs. The Hollywood portrayal of the strung out, shady character in the back alley has become the real life picture of popular cheerleader, or high school quarte......
