Allegory of the Cave - Advantages and Disadvantages Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In "Allegory of the Cave" by Plato, Plato explains the advantages and disadvantages of "leaving the cave" (Plato 218). He explains that there is a process of leaving the cave, which is shocking, confusing, slow, and takes hard work and sacrifice. The allegory is about a man leaving the cave and entering the light. Through this process of adjusting to the light, he overcomes his life of darkness. He now sees and understands the objects that he once only saw shadows of. The allegory is trying to convince you that "the light" is "education" (Plato 220). There comes a point when it is said that the people from the upper world, should go to the lower world, and the question is thrown in the air: "ought we to give them a worse life, when they might have a better?" (Plato 222), and the response is simply put, that everyone is to be equal. No on should be happier then the next person, everyone is to be happy to the same extent.
