The sixteenth century Protestant Reformation was a time of change in Europe for Christians. Prior to the Reformation the Popes and Priests of the Catholic Church had almost total control of society; the economy, political, and religious aspects. The Papacy could obtain this dominance because of one big factor; the majority of the people (the third estate making up 85-90% of the population) could not read. Therefore, people had put complete faith in the priests and their teaching. This created corruption in the church because many priests would take advantage of their power and use it to benefit themselves through indulgences. A split in the church occurred when a few humanists and reformers realized this corruption creating Protestantism. The Protestant Reformation was brought into play because of corruption in the Church and the longing for true assurance of salvation and spiritual enlightenment.
