Both Thomas Hardy and Seamus Heaney were well-versed in the relationship between man and the natural world, having a deep affinity with the countryside of 19th Century Dorset and 20th Century Ireland respectively, in which they grew up. The two poems, Wagtail and Baby, and Blackberry-Picking, display in particular nature within the context of childhood. Though both initially seeming to depict the wonders that open air and rural wildlife provide to such innocent minds, by their conclusions the underlying theme of burgeoning disillusionment and understanding of the world as imperfect is brought to the fore. Though presenting similar features, the content of the poems, and particularly their structure, is at odds in several places. Immediately apparent is their contrasting forms; whilst Wagtail is constructed within the typical quartet of quatrains, Blackberry-Picking is constrained only by its scheme of half-rhymes in a loose iambic pentameter which conveys the carelessness of the poem's juvenile activities.
