War Child is a story of one man's childhood struggle through war, poverty, hatred, and greed in Sudan. Jal Jok (later to be known as Emmanuel Jal) story starts when he was very young. He was the first born male and second child of five children born to him mother and father Simon and Angelina Jok. There are very few certain dates in Jal's life and many of them that are uncertain are because the war and the uprooting of his life at many times. Just like many boys in Sudan at the time of the war, Jal has no knowledge of his actually birthday so he has taken the birthdate of January 01, 1980. Jal was born in a village called Tonj in southern Sudan he and his were happy there and then moved and relocated to the city in the north when Jal's father received a job as a police officer. While in the north although not rich his family was able to live a comfortable life it was there that his younger sister and two brothers were born.
