Identity is a sense of internal and external validation from others, and one's life-long pursuit of acceptance from themself and others. T.S. Eliot's THE LOVESONG OF J ALFRED PRUFROCK particularly explores psychological and social identity by presenting audiences with an insight into his psyche. The way we perceive ourselves and how we are perceived by others is the notion of psychological identity. Eliot explores this when in the twelfth stanza he likens himself to a "pair of ragged claws, scuttling across floors." This morbid self-perception is an example of imagery, as this evokes a reader to picture vermin, which is how Eliot sees his worth. Moreover, the poem's mood slowly transforms from the beginning where he is dominant and self-assured, to total insecurity, and this comparison unwholesomely conveys this pinnacle of self-loathing. One can infer that Eliot's initial confidence in the poem is simply a façade, for in the fourth stanza he claims attending an affluent social event is to "prepare a face to meet the faces that you meet."
