I chose two peer reviewed articles from the University Library as research material for this paper. The first is an article out of Khaleej Times published February 18, 2011 titled Optimism and Health. The second is an article from the Mayo Clinic published in 2009. Both articles discuss the effects of optimism and pessimism on one's physical and psychological health. It is difficult to discuss the effects of optimism without also touching on a comparison of the effects pessimism can have on a person's health and well-being. Positive psychology helps those who are suffering from mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. It teaches that psychologists need to assist patients in building their personal strengths and virtues, bounce back from adversity, enjoy a feeling of life satisfaction, and become more optimistic.
